WordPress Web Developer
This is an in-office position at our address: 📍 1430 E Moreland Blvd, Waukesha, WI

Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain WordPress websites that are semantic, accessible, and easy to manage long-term
- Convert design mock-ups into functional WordPress pages across multiple devices and browsers
- Develop, customize, and maintain WordPress themes and page layouts (including both custom builds and theme-based builds when appropriate)
- Take over (“adopt”) existing WordPress sites built by other developers and maintain, improve, and expand them over time
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues on existing WordPress builds (plugin conflicts, performance issues, broken layouts, mobile problems, etc.)
- Coordinate with project managers and technical leads to translate business and user requirements into stable WordPress solutions
- Collaborate with designers, developers, and QA in an agile environment
- Handle multiple projects and deadlines with a detail-oriented mindset (it is common to work across 2–5 different client projects in a single day)
- Work on a wide range of task sizes, from small 1-hour website updates to large 100+ hour site builds and structural expansions
- Review site structure, layouts, and build approaches for best practices in UI/UX
- Proactively identify issues (performance, SEO-impacting problems, structural limitations, security risks, etc.) before they become a problem and work with project teams and management to facilitate the best resolution
- Maintain and make regular updates to WordPress websites you build, as well as WordPress sites built by others (that the agency manages)
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of WordPress website development, customization, and long-term maintenance
- Comfortable working on a mix of project types including:
- Custom WordPress builds
- Theme-based builds (selecting and customizing themes)
- Existing WordPress sites built by others that require ongoing maintenance and improvement
- Strong understanding of WordPress theme structure, templates, and the WordPress admin environment
- Ability to build clean, responsive, accessible layouts within WordPress
- Solid understanding of responsive design, accessibility, and best UX/UI practices
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to learn quickly.
- Comfortable working in an agency environment with frequent context switching between multiple client websites, priorities, and deadlines
- Ability to work within a team environment where design and production are a collaborative effort
- Familiarity with design applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Passion and self-drive for staying up to date with WordPress best practices, plugin ecosystem changes, and security considerations
- Strong attention to detail, organized, socially perceptive
- Must have a degree or formal training in Computer Science, Web Development, UX/UI Design, Software Engineering or a related field
Skills & experience adding value:
- Strong skillset in HTML, CSS/SCSS, and JavaScript (PHP experience is a major plus)
- Experience working within a source control environment (e.g. Git)
- Proven experience developing, customizing, and maintaining WordPress websites to meet client specifications
- Experience working with Gutenberg and/or page builders (Elementor, WPBakery, Divi, etc.)
- Strong understanding of WordPress performance optimization, security best practices, and plugin/theme management
- Strong understanding of SEO principles
- AI prompt engineering
- Experience working in other CMS / site-builder ecosystems is strongly preferred, including:
- SquareSpace
- Wix
- Shopify
- BigCommerce
- Experience working in an agency environment where project workload ranges from quick-turn updates to long-term multi-week builds
